Historic City Comes of Age

Historic Hobart, with its convict past, was often referred to as Australia’s neglected backwater. How times have changed as its temperate climate, quiet lifestyle and fabulous food and markets make it a revitalising tourist destination along the Derwent River in Tasmania.

The city’s significant maritime history begins at Constitution Dock, situated along the waterfront and facing the beautiful harbour. Nearby Battery Point and affluent Sandy Bay feature Georgian and Victorian architecture and the first settler’s cottages in Australia’s 2nd oldest city.

Escape to a memorable view of Hobart town from the snow-covered Mount Wellington or get close up and personal in the city’s quaint streets. Hobart comes alive during the colourful Salamanca Market, held every Saturday morning, where you can bag a bargain or sample mouth-watering produce such as local wines and cheeses.

Cascade Brewery and Cadbury’s Chocolates have tours of these Tasmanian icons or visit Wrest Point Casino, a popular event and entertainment centre.

The annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in December and Tulip Festival in the Royal Botanical Gardens swells the population in this small capital city. Make sure you check Booking.com ahead of time for your colonial cottage, cosy B&B or waterfront apartment.

Lots of history in and around Hobart. Car useful. Not sure about public transport. City and waterfront interesting Lots to see outside the city - bush, countryside, harbours, inlets and beaches. Didn't have a chance to visit MONA. There's more to see and I'll be back.

Great little city/town with plenty to do in the city. There's plenty within and hour or two's drive of the city, a must to get a car, forget the tours and do your own itinerary. Must see's Freycinet, Bruny, Maria Island, all within 2-3hrs of the city.

I went to Hobart for a family event. I always enjoy going there as there is a lot for everyone in the family to do and great places to eat. The only thing I do not like about Hobart is that at peak times the Brooker Highway gets terribly clogged with traffic and that should be sorted out e.g. a communter train.

The history of the town- just taking a walk around and looking at the old buildings. A short visit to some lovely winerys and restaurants around Richmond. Lovely restaurants down at the wharf and Salamanca Place. A day trip to Bruny Island which included a delicious lunch at Aloinah Hotel.

We had too little time but enjoyed visiting MONA, driving to Richmond and then to Port Arthur. A second day driving to Bruny Island and up Mt Wellington. Would have liked to spend time exploring Battery Point and the Art Gallery and Museum - but another time! Had good food at Franklin Wharf and Wrest Point dining room downstairs had a good inexpensive meal. We were hoping to have a cocktail in the revolving restaurant but this is now $99 per head for meal only. Still everyone we met in Hobart was helpful and friendly
